Another tradition and proud product of Venice is their mosaics. The Orsoni shop is a family-owned company that has produced colored glass mosaic tiles (otherwise known as tesserae by the locals) since 1888. Amazingly, the shop is still there and so is the family. The shop can offer you the chance to purchase some incredibly works of art from the craftsmen there, as well as the chance to watch them as they carefully manage huge vats of molted glass and cleverly mold them into shapes and tiles on their humble wooden shelves.
The glass is simply snapped into perfect square shapes by someone in another room. You can get yourself a tour of the shop for as little as £8, so if you’d like to see a little bit of history then it’s a great place to visit. If you buy from their shop, however (whether it’s artwork, tiles or jewelry), then they are more than happy to give you the tour for free.
